About the Juror
Roy Flukinger, Independent Curator Emeritus, Austin, Texas

Before his retirement in 2017, Roy Flukinger served for 46 years as the Senior Research Curator of Photography and earlier as the Department Head and Senior Curator of Photography and Film of the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin. In terms of his academic background, Roy holds advanced degrees from Tulane University and The University of Texas Austin. In the course of managing and building the departmental collections at the Center, he has also lectured extensively and internationally, curated or participated in nearly 80 exhibitions, authored over a dozen books and numerous peer articles, and taught as an Assistant Professor, Adjunct Lecturer or Visiting Artist at The University and many other institutions of higher learning.

Roy continues to serve on many professional boards and is engaged in numerous other projects including presentations and panel participations on contemporary and historical photography, as well as contributing to a number of publications throughout the field. Beyond his recent retirement, Roy also continues to consult with a variety of institutions on the administration, funding and operation of photographic organizations; serves as juror, reviewer and evaluator for contemporary photographic events, groups and support organizations; and, conducts peer reviews and evaluations for a variety of professional, scholarly and developmental organizations. He is currently completing the research and compilation of a volume on modern Texas photography and beginning another on the works and career of the artist Bart Parker.

Juror’s Statement
Okay. So it has been more than three decades since I and a whole bunch of other photographers geared up this organization and started featuring the work of our initial members. I am so pleased to see our members’ rolls expanding and our competitions increasing and maturing over all these years—not to mention, honored to be invited to select works for the 31st Annual Members' Only exhibition.

Over the years, I have been impressed by the number and quality of the imagery that TPS has continued to attract to these competitions. Also, not to mention, what the previous outstanding jurors have required of the past entrants—the seriousness and, yes, excellence which have been often realized. To see these works throughout these decades has made it possible to view an important window onto the evolution and maturation of photography into the 21st century.

So where do we go from here?

For this upcoming competition, let us all look forward to the continuation and expansion of the high standards of the past years. Certainly the artistry and sophistication of your work must be evident from the beginning. Regardless of its origins or intent, each image must be powerful and meaningful enough to stand on its own. The techniques and process must be expert and sufficient to support that same imagery. Of equal (and sometimes greater) importance, the originality and emotional power of each photograph must be true to the expression and intent of its creator. An honest juror must always try to understand what the photographer has chosen to say and not just how they have chosen to say it.

That remains the constant—and for me, ever fascinating—challenge of every photograph’s potential integrity and virtuosity. Hard work for yours truly. But even much harder work for you. And oh, so worthwhile.

Keep on seeing, well and truly. For this exhibition—and for all your future years to come.
