Juror's Remarks
Thank you for the invitation to serve as juror for this exhibition. It was a privilege to review such a strong and diverse group of student submissions. The range of approaches spanned traditional darkroom processes, digital practices, constructed images, documentary work, and experimental forms and reflects the expansive field that photography has become.
The quality and number of entries made the selection process challenging. Narrowing the exhibition to fifty images required difficult decisions, and many compelling works could not be included. In the final selection, I was drawn to photographs that demonstrated technical excellence, formal rigor, and thoughtful conceptual investigation. Equally important was a distinct point of view, images that felt specific to the artist, grounded in personal vision.
The works included here represent a wide spectrum of voices and strategies. Together, they affirm that contemporary photography remains a dynamic and evolving language. One shaped by craft, curiosity, and the courage to experiment.
My congratulations to all who submitted work.
Juror’s Statement
Photography continues to evolve as both a technical process and a creative language - expanding beyond traditional definitions. In my teaching, I embrace everything from darkroom-based black-and-white prints to digital manipulation, installation, video, and post-photographic processes. For me, what unites strong photographic work across these varied forms is a distinct point of view - an image or series that could only have been made by that particular artist at that particular moment. I value the widest approaches to image-making - work that takes risks, work that is deeply rooted in craft, work that challenges our viewpoints, work that expresses our current moment and histories, work rooted in the history of photography, and work that pushes the boundaries of what photography can be.
Texas Photographic Society is proud to present #NewVisions2026, our annual online, open-themed collegiate student photo competition. The exhibition will be juried by Paho Mann, Associate Professor of Photography at the College of Visual Arts and Design, University of North Texas, and a photographer with work in the collections of the Tucson Museum of Art, the Museum at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland, Kansas, and the City of Phoenix Public Art Program.
Submissions from college undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students of all skill levels are encouraged. Students may submit up to 12 images and each image will be judged independently. CASH PRIZES will be awarded. See details below.
