About the Juror
Malcolm Daniel, Curator of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas

Malcolm Daniel is the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, a position he assumed in December 2013 after 23 years on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, including 9 years as head of that museum’s Department of Photographs. He received his BA in Studio Art and Art History from Trinity College, Hartford, and his Masters and Doctorate in Art History from Princeton University. A specialist in nineteenth-century French and British photography, he has curated or co-curated many exhibitions focused on key figures in the history of photography and is the author of numerous exhibition catalogues and scholarly articles. He has lectured widely and has served as adjunct professor for Columbia University and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Although his scholarly work has concentrated on the first 75 years of the medium, Daniel has a keen interest in contemporary photographs and oversees the museum’s acquisitions and exhibitions spanning the full history of photography from its birth to the present day.

Juror’s Statement
I’m excited to be serving as juror for TPS' 30th Annual Members Only exhibition and hope to see a wide variety of work. Whether I’m viewing a documentary project, street photography, abstraction, prints focused on process and materiality, a tableau set up for the camera, diaristic photographs, or images made entirely in the computer, I’m looking for work that is not merely beautiful but also means something; that is expressive and not just an assignment methodically carried out; that uses the materials and processes of photography in new ways but also reveals mastery, not just experimentation; or that stands out for its subject or aesthetic sensibility.  I realize that leaves the door open to many kinds of photography, and that’s what I intend. I’m looking for “Best in Breed” as well as “Best in Show.”

3. Do NOT use spaces in the file name, and do NOT use special characters such as :;’”/?}{()[ ]+=*&^%$#@! (use only alpha-numeric characters).

4. Please prepare the following information for each image: (1) print title; (2) process [Archival Digital Print, Gelatin Silver Print, Platinum/Palladium Print, etc.]; and (3) price or NFS.

If Your Work is Accepted
* Please note that our guidelines for this show have changed.

1. Artwork must be ready-to-hang using wire and must not exceed 36" in the longest dimension. Please make sure that wire is attached firmly to the back of the piece (NO sawtooth hangers). If applicable, please use white mats and frames that are gallery quality and complement your work (color mats are not acceptable). NO glass please; Plexiglass only. Clearly label the back of your work with your full name and contact information. TPS reserves the right to exclude works from the exhibition that are not gallery-ready and professional in presentation.

2. A pre-paid return shipping label MUST be provided with your work (FedEx or UPS preferred) for prints to be returned to you when the exhibition concludes. Work WITHOUT return shipping will NOT be included in the exhibition and will NOT be returned. Prints will be return shipped in the container in which they were received. No packing “peanuts”, and please be considerate of our limited storage space when choosing the size of your packaging.

3. Work must arrive in Houston, Texas, no later than August 26, 2017.
