TPS 28: The International Competition

Juror Arthur Meyerson has selected 50 prints by 47 photographers for TPS 28. A complete list of the exhibiting artists is below, with award winners noted in bold. A hearty congrats to all!

The show opened with a public reception on July 27, 2019 from 4 - 6 pm at the Art League of Baytown, in Baytown, Texas. TPS 28 travels next to the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas, from November 21, 2019 through January 18, 2020 and finally Phillips Goff Gallery at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas, January 27 through March 5, 2020. Phillips Goff Gallery is located in Sedate Hall, Odessa College, 201 W. University Ave., Odessa, TX 79764. Gallery hours are M-TH 9 am - 9 pm, and F 9 am - 1 pm (closed on Sat/Sun).

Texas Photographic Society is thrilled to announce that TPS 28: The International Competition will be juried by Arthur Meyerson, recognized as one of America’s finest color photographers. This call is open-themed, and submissions from artists of all levels are encouraged. This competition is now closed.

Entry Fee
Entry fee is $30 for 5 images, plus $6 for each additional image. Photographers may enter up to 10 images. Please don't forget to include your membership fee, if also joining TPS at the time of entry.

Eligibility
TPS 28: The International Competition is open to artists of all levels nationally and internationally. All photographic based work is encouraged including digital, silver and alternative processes. You do not need to be a member of the Texas Photographic Society to enter this competition. However, you may join TPS and enter this show at the same time (read more about TPS member benefits). Works exhibited previously in a TPS show are not eligible, and all entries must be submitted digitally. Current members of the TPS Board of Directors are permitted to enter but are not eligible for awards.

Instructions for entry are outlined below, following the juror’s bio and statement.

About the Juror
Arthur Meyerson is recognized as one of America's finest color photographers. Over the years, this native Texan has traveled throughout the world creating award winning advertising, corporate and editorial photographs, as well as an extensive body of fine art imagery. Adweek magazine named him Southwest Photographer of the Year on three separate occasions and American Photo has selected him as one of the top photographers in advertising.

His awards are numerous, including gold medals from the New York Art Directors Club, the Art Directors Club of Houston, the Dallas Society of Visual Communications and the prestigious Stephen Kelly Award for his work on the Nike advertising campaign. He was selected by Nikon to their illustrious Legends Behind the Lens list and honored by the Houston Advertising Federation as the inaugural recipient of the Only In Houston award for individuals “whose creativity and passion for his art have brought recognition to the city of Houston”. In 2008, the Houston Decorative Center named him as the first recipient of photography in their annual Stars Of Design celebration. Besides his commercial work, Arthur’s fascination with light, color and the moment continues and has culminated into an impressive body of personal work as well. His photographs are included in many public and private collections and have been exhibited internationally. He has been profiled in many publications including Communication Arts, Rangefinder, Camera Arts, Graphis, Digital Photo Pro, Zoom (France), Portfolio, Idea (Japan), Novum (Germany), Photoworld (China), and Fotodigital (Portugal).

In 2012, he published his highly acclaimed book, The Color of Light, a collection of some of his personal iconic color images from the past four decades and his latest book, The Journey, tracing his photographic life, was released in 2017.

Juror’s Statement
I am often asked, “Should I enter a photography exhibition?” And my answer is always the same, “Yes”. In my life as a photographer, exhibitions played an important roll in helping me understand what I was doing right as well as what needed work. Photographs that were selected not only received notice and gave me confidence, but also helped to establish me and my career. Having your work judged for an exhibition is also a barometer of where you are photographically amongst your peers. Besides, why spend so much time, money and effort to make pictures that never see the light of day? You owe it to yourself as well as to those images to give them a chance for the world to see.

It is an honor and a privilege to be judging the Texas Photographic Society’s 28th Annual Photography Exhibition. When judging a show like this, I use the same criteria I consider when I’m looking at and editing my own images. That is, photographs that are well-seen, with strong compositions, a sensitivity to light and suggest a personal point of view. On the flip side, the photographic cliché, the derivative image or the highly manipulated photo is not what I will be looking for. I want to see pictures that not only give answers but also provoke questions. Those that make us stop and look and keep us coming back for more. Of course, in a very selective show such as this one, the odds are high for not having all the work chosen, but for those photographs that do “make the cut”, one can be very proud. I encourage you to “take the plunge” and enter this year’s TPS exhibition because the opportunity for acceptance and recognition may just be the thing that helps your photographic life move to it’s next step. – Arthur Meyerson

Prepare Your Files
1. Files should be 1200 pixels in the longest dimension and saved in JPEG format on the highest quality setting. Images should also be saved in RGB color space.

2. Label each file as FirstName_Lastname_ followed by consecutive numbers. For example: Sam_Jones_1.jpg, Sam_Jones_2.jpg, etc. Please don't forget to include the "jpg" extension.

3. Do NOT use spaces in the file name, and do NOT use special characters such as :;’”/?}{()[ ]+=*&^%$#@! (use only alpha-numeric characters).

4. Please prepare the following information for each image: (1) print title; (2) process [Cyanotype, Gum Bichromate, Platinum/Palladium, etc.]; and (3) price or NFS.

Sales
TPS encourages the sales of exhibited work. In support of the artists, TPS will not collect commission from print sales. The Art League of Baytown will collect 30% on any sales. Please print your name, address, telephone number(s) and price on the back of each accepted piece. If your work is Not-For-Sale, simply note NFS but provide a dollar value for record-keeping purposes. If you do not indicate a sales price, the artwork will be listed as NFS.

Liability
TPS and the venue will exercise all due care when handling your work, but will not be held responsible for loss, damage or replacement.

Reproduction
TPS and the venue retain the right to display, project and reproduce work accepted for this exhibition for publicity and promotional purposes only. Individual photographers retain copyright to his/her own individual images. Also, an exhibition catalog will be created to showcase the juror's selections.

If Your Work is Accepted
1. Prints must be mounted and overmatted using 16" x 20" 4-ply (minimum) white museum quality mat board with at least 2" of mat visible on all sides of the print. Maximum print size is 12" x 16". Smaller prints, 3" x 5" for example, are acceptable if they are mounted and overmatted to the 16" x 20" size. To ensure consistency in presentation, please frame your work using simple black metal frames with Plexiglass ONLY (no glass). Also, attach hanging wire on the back of your frame, and clearly label the back of your framed work with your full name and contact information. TPS reserves the right to exclude works from the exhibition that are not matted and framed according to specifications.

2. A pre-paid return shipping label MUST be provided with your work (FedEx or UPS preferred) for prints to be returned to you when the exhibition concludes. Work WITHOUT return shipping will NOT be included in the exhibition and will NOT be returned. Prints will be return shipped in the container in which they were received. No packing “peanuts”, and please be considerate of our limited storage space when choosing the size of your packaging.

3. Work must arrive in Baytown, Texas, no later than June 10, 2019.
