The Texas Photographic Society will open this year's PHOTOTexas in San Antonio with a Latino themed Exhibition. Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit digital files of their color and black & white works to TPS by August 29 for the Captivar La Luz: A Latino Experience. This exhibit is open to photographers of all backgrounds, as long as the subject of the work is related to Latin life, culture, conflict and/or any social or economic issues. Kathy Vargas, TPS Advisory Council Member and juror, is particularly interested in Photographic Projects on this theme. Artists may submit images for either the
Individual Image Category or the Project Category.
For the Individual Image Category, artists may submit up to 10 unrelated images consistent with the overall theme of the exhibition.
The Project Category is for artists submitting up to 10 images that are related by theme, subject matter or style. Ms. Vargas may chose 4–6 images from each selected Project for the exhibition. Those entering the Project Category should attach an Artist Statement and Project Description for each project entered. The Project Description will be reprinted for the exhibition and exhibition catalogue. Entering into the Project Category also qualifies those images for acceptance into the Individual Image Category IF the Project itself is
not selected for inclusion in the exhibition.
The exhibit will open at the Blue Star LAB Gallery in San Antonio, Texas on October 13 with an Artist Reception curated by juror Kathy Vargas. The Blue Star LAB, an annex of Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, is a venue that allows for expanded exhibitions from the Blue Star Main Campus, as well as the promotion of experimental work, is generously made possible by Zurich International Properties, Inc. Blue Star Contemporary Art Center is a non-profit, non-collecting contemporary art center in San Antonio, Texas that advances the growth and understanding of contemporary art, artists and the curatorial process. Through exhibitions and a variety of programs, Blue Star is an active participant in the development of regional, national and international contemporary art and provides a lively forum for the visual arts dialogue.
Juror's Statement
“Latino” is a broad category, and I have eclectic tastes. Rather than define or limit what I think “Latino” should be, I want the artist/photographer to be able to address the topic without reference to the juror’s specifications. What I will look for in these photographs is what I look for in all photos: the insightful moment; the perfect confluence of form and content; the unique expression. Whatever and however a photographer wishes to represent a theme, the best photographs will make people of all backgrounds gasp in awe.
