TPS Workshop > Our Town: Amarillo

Our Town: Amarillo

Our Town: Amarillo

Amarillo will host the first workshop series followed by Odessa and Longview. Each workshop will culminate with a traveling exhibition. We have also secured funding for a catalog of the Amarillo exhibition. The Amarillo event will be held in October and three workshops will be offered on subsequent weekends. The courses are designed sequentially to build upon each other but may be taken individually.

Angilee Wilkerson, instructor at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, will lead with a workshop on The Environmental Portrait & Lighting. As digital photography has become the current norm in picture taking, Scott Campbell, commercial and fine art photographer, and digital imaging specialist will lead a workshop on integrating Adobe Camera RAW files into your Workflow. Nine Francois, instructor at Texas State University will lead her unique workshop on Discovering your Photographic Voice. Taking the knowledge gained from the three workshops, Ms. Francois will tie them together by giving the participants assignments to photograph their own environment (in this case, the city of Amarillo and the near region) in their own personal style. Participants will be encouraged to photograph the people, places and things that make their city distinct from the other cities in Texas.

The strength of the Our Town project is Texans interpreting the uniqueness of their immediate area. Participants will be encouraged to take all three workshops, but this will not be necessary for inclusion in the exhibit/catalogue. The workshops will be held in the Photography Department at Amarillo College.

November 8 & 9, 2008
Nine Francois
(Austin, Texas)
Discovering Your Photographic Voice

Workshop fee: $ 125
Workshop limit 15

Have you ever hoped to embark on a photo project that may someday turn into a book? Would you like to use photography to investigate and learn more about your family, your community, the culture and region you live in?

This workshop is designed to help you find and develop your “voice” in photography.  Through visual exercises, photographic assignments, presentations, discussions, and critiques this workshop will help you see and understand how your images connect with one another and will help you move in the direction of creating a thematic body of work that has meaning for you.

It will address questions like:
• How do my images connect? What are they really about?
• What am I trying to say?
• How can I talk about what’s important to me through photography?
• What approach should I use to create this work?
• How do I get started on a meaningful project? What resources are available to me?
• What techniques are conducive to relay- ing my idea?
• How should I edit? How many prints should I aim for?
• What should the final project physically look like?
• What can I do with this project once it’s complete? Who might be interested in publishing, exhibiting, buying this work?

Participants of all levels will benefit from this workshop, however, as it will not focus specifically on technical issues, participants will most benefit once they have a strong command of basic photographic technique (exposure, metering, depth-of-field, output, etc.) and are comfortable using their cameras. Also, photographers of every flavor – from digital documentarists to alternative process fine artists – are encouraged to participate. They will equally benefit in moving their work to the next level.

Nine Francois holds an MFA in photography from The University of Texas at Austin. Her work is internationally published and exhibited, and is included in numerous private and public collections.
Mrs. Francois currently teaches photography in the Department of Art & Design at Texas State University and in the commercial photography program at Austin Community College. She’s actively involved in various photography projects such as creating a writing and photography program for youth in east Austin, organizing exchange exhibitions between French and Texas photographers, and coordinating round-table discussions on photography. She’s particularly attracted to the “language” of photography and how we use this to communicate ideas and sensibilities.)

Previous Our Town: Amarillo workshops that took place last year:

October 6 & 7, 2007
Angilee Wilkerson
(Denton, Texas)
Environmental Portrait & Lighting

The Environmental Portrait workshop teaches strategies for constructing images communicating identity with eloquence and passion. Participants will learn how to utilize light and the subject’s familiar and natural surroundings to create mood, build narratives, and capture emotions and gestures.

Students are encouraged to bring a portfolio of portraits for the purpose of critique. The workshop will consist of a visual presentation on the environmental portrait, location lighting, and group discussions. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to go on location with the instructor for the purpose of photographing human subjects together with the West Texas landscape.

The interactive class will provide ample opportunity to expand one’s technical skills with exposure, perspective, and composition. Most importantly, by studying the subject in his or her environment, students will learn how to engage individuals in a photographically meaningful way, thereby making possible genuinely insightful human portraits.

Who should attend:
Beginning to intermediate photographers who want to explore new ways of making a meaningful and engaging portrait. I will discuss equipment, overhead lighting, working with the subject and personal style.

Angilee Wilkerson lives and works in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. She is an artist, University instructor, and professional editorial photographer. Angilee has participated in more than 30 national and regional exhibitions since 2002, including five solo shows. Angilee has been recognized and honored by Jurors from The Dallas Museum of Art; The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY; The Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; The George Eastman Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester, NY; Temple University, Philadelphia, PA; SOHO Photo Gallery, New York, NY; The Society for Photographic Education; Aperture Magazine; and many others.

Angilee’s photographs have been featured in fine art journals, editorial magazines, and newspapers, including The Photo Review; Photographer’s Forum; Harper’s & Queen-London; The Wall Street Journal; and countless others. Angilee is active in her community, leading workshops for institutions such as The Dallas Museum of Art, and the Girl Scouts of America. She has also worked with students in various local Universities, Colleges, High Schools, and Cultural Centers. In 2005, Angilee curated Works on Water, an international exhibition of multimedia artists celebrating the Art, Science, and Philosophy of water-related issues, as part of the 2005 WaterWays Symposium at the University of North Texas. Her work frequently examines memory and identity, family narratives, and the nature of alterity through llandscapes.

October 13 & 14, 2007
Scott Campbell
(Longview, Texas)
Implementing Adobe Camera
RAW Files into your Workflow

Scott Campbell is a photographer and digital color specialist. Working with photographers and graphic professionals, Scott develops digital workflow procedures for Dynamic Resource Group, a publishing and printing company based out of Indiana. In 1996 Scott pioneered one of the first digitally based commercial photography studios in East Texas. Many find Scott’s non-intimidating, “explain it to me like a six year old” approach to teaching digital techniques invaluable.
Campbell’s images have been published in many national publications including Communication Arts and Lenswork. His highly sought after personal work focuses on the landscape of East Texas as well as still life, both in the studio and on location.

RAW shooting is the hottest topic among digital photographers and this class focuses on the processes involved in implementing Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) and RAW files into photographers’ workflows. Scott’s inside knowledge of the format and years of experience helping people adopt RAW into their own workflow provides a unique background into this technology as it finally becomes mainstream.

This workshop covers the sophisticated tools built into ACR and using them in a workflow. Actual case scenarios will highlight:
• Optimizing exposure in-camera prior to developing.
• Optimizing neutrality, color balance, shadows and highlights.
• Correcting for defects with certain lens
& camera/digital back combos.
• Image sharpening & why it may/may not make sense to do this in ACR.
• Essential Bridge integration including batch processing.
• How to edit large amounts of images after a shoot.
• Explanation of Metadata, sidecar files, and other geek terms.
• The new Digital Negative DNG format what it is and how to use Adobe’s new DNG Converter.
• Complete coverage of new Photoshop CS3 features.

Students with laptops and RAW capable cameras are encouraged to bring them and play along during the class.
