Juror's Pre-Jurying Comments:
One of the great pleasures of being a working photographer and Professor of Art is the path traveled leading to the profound enjoyment of the wide, eclectic, and sometimes tumultuous world of contemporary photography. I always look forward to discovering new work that engages.
My advice is donít try and second-guess an experienced juror as to what they may or may not respond to. Send what you think is your best work and Iíll give it my best attention. Many of us have wide-ranging tastes with great affection for alternative processes, documentary, digital, book arts, mixed media, and strong conceptual work.
My aesthetic, such as it is, is that of an art populist. I believe there are strong artists working in just about every town, small or large, in America. I also believe well intentioned work is important, and should be encouraged. Black and white, color, commercial, fine art, film, or digital, it's ALL good from this juror's viewpoint.
Keith Carter
Endowed Walles Chair of Art
Lamar University
About the Juror:
Keith Carter is an internationally recognized photographer and educator. He holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University Beaumont, Texas. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey Grants and the Lange-Taylor Prize from The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. In 1997 Keith Carter was the subject of an arts profile on the national network television show, CBS Sunday Morning. In 1998, he received Lamar University’s highest teaching honor, the University Professor Award, and he was named the Lamar University Distinguished Lecturer. Eight monographs of his black and white photographs have been published. Called “a poet of the ordinary” by the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Carter’s haunting, enigmatic photographs have been widely exhibited in Europe, The U.S., and Latin America.
